Finding effective emissions removal projects is no small task. Our scientists make sure that the projects we are supporting are “additional,” which means the emissions reductions definitely wouldn’t have been implemented without your funding. 

Additionality is crucial because it means you are really making a difference, rather than simply donating to a cause that probably would have happened anyway.

Tackling climate change is all about setting and meeting emission reduction targets.  To know the how much emissions our projects are preventing, we need to know the level of emissions both before and after project implementation. This is how we ensure that project developers are not overestimating their impact.

Just to be on the safe side, we assume project developers are underestimating the emission reductions. This conservatism lets us be 100% sure our projects are helping the world meet its climate goals.

The most reliable way to reduce emissions globally is to stop them from happening in the first place. Once emissions from our projects are removed, there is no risk that they will be returned to the atmosphere at a later date.‍

Additional
One of the biggest pitfalls around carbon offsets is that funding often goes to projects that would have proceeded otherwise. For instance, based on the falling cost of wind power, large scale wind farms are already cost competitive in most places in the world.

At Neutreeno, we only fund technologies that won't happen without us.

Direct and immediate
Some projects rely on highly unlikely assumptions. For instance, forest protection projects assume that the trees would be cut down in droves otherwise. But in reality, it’s impossible for project developers to know how many trees, if any, would be logged without the project.

At Neutreeno, we don’t rely on these types of assumptions. Our projects tackle emissions directly, by destroying or removing emissions that would otherwise be released.

Permanent
Many nature-based projects rely on specific assumptions about the future of the projects - which can be highly uncertain. For instance, investing in a tree planting project today doesn't guarantee the trees will still be there in 10 years.

At Neutreeno, we aim to only select projects where the emissions removal is permanent, so we don't have to rely on this kind of nebulous accounting.

Neutralizing Nitrous Oxide at the Source.
Nitrous oxide has 300 times the global warming potential of CO₂ for trapping heat in our atmosphere.

In many developing countries there is no regulation against the emission of N₂O, giving rise to important fertilizer plants releasing 1.27 million tons of CO₂e vapour per year.

There is no financial incentive for plant operators to capture N₂O emissions, so this project funds the expensive catalyst that removes an impressive 99% of N₂O from plant tail gas.

This means N₂O is destroyed directly at the source, before it is released into the atmosphere.

Factory
Turning Waste into Energy.
Once our waste arrives at a landfill site, it starts to decompose. This releases methane, which has a global warming potential of 25 times that of CO₂.

Usually, this methane is released into the atmosphere since there is currently no incentive for landfill site managers to prevent this from happening.

We support projects that enable methane emissions from landfill sites to be captured and flared, before they can be released. Within this project, captured methane is even used to generate energy used by the site.

Projects like these not only prevent emissions from happening but also promote sustainable waste management practises.
